Type Locality and Naming
Eastern Fujian. The Fujian Regional Geological Survey Team erected the Nanyuan Formation in 1966. The section for the designation is from Qiaotou to Nanyuan of the Minhou County of Fujian. Now apparently separated into a lower Changlin Fm, middle Ezhai Fm, and upper Chishui Fm based on revised descriptions of those formations.
Synonym: Nanyuan Fm.
Lithology and Thickness
The formation is widespread in the eastern part of Fujian. Its middle and upper parts are built up by a set of greatly thick-bedded moderately acid-acid eruptive rocks, its lower part a set of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.

Shown as Berriasian through Hauterivian interval in Xi et al. (2019). But radiometric dates for The "Nanyuan Fm" are mainly in 142-133 Ma range => Berriasian-Valanginian; and the dates from the "Nanyuan Group" lower formation of Changlin Fm center on 155-150 Ma (Kimmeridgian) (Guangfu Xing, Jianqing Li, Zheng Duan, Mingxuan Cao, Minggang Yu, Pingli Chu, Rong Chen.
